Learn About the CACNA1A Foundation and CACNA1A-related Disorders:
The CACNA1A Foundation, founded in 2020, is a parent-led, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals affected by CACNA1A-related disorders. It focuses on advancing research, supporting families, and raising public awareness.
CACNA1A-related disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions caused by mutations in the CACNA1A gene, which is a calcium ion channel gene that plays a crucial role in the central nervous system and cerebellum. These mutations disrupt the brain's electrical signaling, causing a range of neurological conditions, including global developmental delays, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, ataxia (issues with balance and coordination), hemiplegic migraines (severe episodes resembling strokes leading to coma, brain swelling, and skill regression), speech and language disorders, and eye movement disorders. The prevalence is estimated to be 1 in 11,700 individuals (Lopez-Rivera et al., 2020).
